Phase01 verscheen afgelopen week twee keer in de Engelse media vanwege de Brexit protesten in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Journalisten van Wired en Dailymail onderzochten hoeveel demonstranten er werkelijk aan de ‘People’s Vote March’ in Londen hadden deelgenomen. Om antwoord op die vraag te krijgen, namen zij contact op.
De organisatie claimde dat er bij het protest in Londen een miljoen mensen op de been waren [1][2]. Crowd experts uit Australië schatten een bezoekersaantal tussen de 300 en 400 duizend demonstranten in. Die schatting werd bevestigd door Professor in Crowd Science, Keith Still [3][4].
De journalisten waren vooral geïnteresseerd in de methode hoe het aantal personen in dergelijke mensenmassa’s te tellen [3].
The most in-depth method is the RAMP analysis, which monitors ingress and egress routes to an area, the area itself, the movement of the mass of people, and the profile of the participants (for instance, their age helps establish how fast they can walk). “With this information we have a clear picture of how many people can enter the space, how long it will take to fill up the space and so on,” says Eric Kant, a crowd management specialist at Dutch company Phase01. This method also analyses images and video collected during the event.
Grove schatting van het aantal demonstranten
De journalisten vroegen verder of er een schatting van het aantal demonstranten gemaakt kon worden op basis van beschikbare beelden van de mars. Door de hoeveelheid demonstranten in de Londense straten te vergelijken met het aantal demonstranten tijdens eenzelfde protest in Oktober 2018 – waarvan de bezoekersaantallen door Eric Kant en Bert Bruynincks zijn geanalyseerd – kon een grove schatting worden gemaakt: tijdens de People’s Vote March op 23 maart in London liepen zo’n 200 tot 300 duizend demonstranten mee [5].
Eric Kant, a crowd management specialist based in the Netherlands for firm Phase01, went further, saying the true figure was most likely somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000. He said: ‘It was a huge crowd last week, but I do not think the initial one million figure is realistic.’
Using the latest cutting-edge techniques, he also analysed the numbers on the previous People’s Vote March in October. At the time organisers claimed nearly 700,000 attended, a figure repeated by mainstream media outlets such as the BBC. But Mr Kant said the true number was most likely around 105.000.
